David Wolff has been playing fingerstyle guitar since the age of 15 — when he first heard a Hot Tuna record and decided he needed to learn how to make that sound himself.
It was the playing of Jorma Kaukonen that grabbed him — and never let go.
What started as curiosity quickly became a lifelong pursuit.
Years later, that same pursuit led David to teaching alongside Jorma at Fur Peace Ranch — an experience that shaped both his playing and the way he teaches today.

From Player to Teacher
David didn’t set out to become a teacher.
But over time, as he developed his own way of learning — breaking down complex songs, understanding technique, and internalizing the music — it became something he naturally began to share.
Today, he teaches guitar players around the world through private lessons, workshops, and live instruction.
His focus isn’t just on playing the notes.
It’s on helping students understand what they’re playing — so it actually sounds the way it’s meant to.
How He Approaches The Music
At the core of David’s work is a simple idea:
Play from the heart, not the chart.
The goal is to reach a point where the music moves through you naturally — without overthinking, without relying on tab, and without disconnect between what you hear and what you play.

Experience & Lineage
Over the years, David has learned from, taught with, and played alongside some of the most respected musicians in this tradition, including:

His playing and teaching are deeply rooted in the lineage of blues, folk, and Americana guitar — with influences spanning artists like Jerry Garcia, Reverend Gary Davis, and Blind Blake.
Beyond The Guitar
When he’s not teaching, David performs on Martha’s Vineyard and beyond — bringing the same depth and intention to live performance as he does to teaching.
His workshops, held in locations like Martha’s Vineyard, Los Angeles, and San Diego, have become more than just learning environments.
They’ve grown into a community — one where students return year after year, not just to improve, but to stay connected to the music and each other.
Today
David continues to teach, perform, and share the music he’s spent a lifetime studying.
Whether through a private lesson, a workshop, or a live performance, his goal remains the same:
To help others connect more deeply to the music — and to their own playing.
